Winter Fun

What a busy and fun week the Schers had! Last Wednesday was the school Open House that included a Social Studies Fair. The younger grades displayed various projects they have done throughout the year in relation to seasons, communities, the solar system and more. From 3rd grade up, the students had to prepare project boards, each grade with different subjects. Kaylynn had to choose an occupation that serves the community. She chose a judge. She interviewed a friend of ours who serves as a local judge. She had to write a page report about judges including what they do and why they are important to the community. At the Open House, she had to dress like her occupation and answer visitors' questions as they passed by her display. Each student also got in front of all the guests on the microphone and shared what they had chosen and why. She did an excellent job!

On Saturday we headed north to Swiss Valley to ski. The kids spent the day in Valley Kids, or ski school. They progressed very well and ended up going on the second largest hill at the resort, the second level Blue Diamond. Me? Well, I tried and progressed from the easy/bunny hill to the first Blue Diamond hill. All attempts to master this hill ended with it having the best of me. One crash was quite a site as Eric said all he could see were my skis and legs flying through the air! So, needless to say, the Scher kids totally skied circles around their mom! Eric did great and even mustered the courage to take on the easier of the Black Diamond hills. Our friends who joined us also had a great time and suffered the only "injury" of the trip - a skinned up cheek from a face first fall on the icy snow.

On Sunday we headed to Pokagon State Park to have a try at the Toboggan Run. It was a good time. One tip for anyone who decides to try it - have someone be your "gopher" meeting you at the bottom to bring you and your toboggan back up the hill. It saves time and energy! The group got in 3 runs. When I went along with the kids and Eric, we got up to 31 miles per hour at the speed check point! Amazing how fast you can go!

No school today for the kids so they have enjoyed a long break as they also had Friday off. Back at it tomorrow and our final stretch of basketball games. We have one more practice and then a game at home on Thursday and again next Tuesday. This coming weekend the kids and I are headed back to Michigan for a judo tournament in Kalamazoo. Wish them luck as this is the first tournament for them since last fall and the first of about 3 in the next month.

That is our latest update. Hope everyone is well and enjoying life! Take care and we will update again soon!

Keeping Busy

Not a whole lot new to report since last week. Kids and I enjoyed a relaxing weekend at home. Well, they may not say relaxing or enjoyed as we cleaned the house and worked to really clean their rooms. I sent Eric upstairs to see them as soon as he got home before the storms struck again! Saturday evening I took the kids to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop. We went to an old theater just south of here. Can you believe that all 3 of us got in and had popcorn and drinks for $14! It was great!

This weekend we are trying a new adventure - at least for the kids - and a rare one for Eric and I. We will be heading to Swiss Valley in Jones, MI to ski! The kids will be in ski school for the day and Eric and I will brave the slopes. It has been years since I have skied. Wish me luck as I am not sure how my knees will hold up. Another family is going with us so should be loads of fun. On Sunday, we plan to stop at Pokagon State Park in Angola to try our hand at the toboggan run! I believe we have more friends joining us that day! We will let you all know how these adventures go!

Well, I should be calling it a night as everyone else is asleep. Every take care and stay safe!

Boy How Time Flies!

Was it really that long ago that we posted an update?? Guess it could have something to do with how busy last week was for us. It was the annual celebration of Catholic Schools and a week full of fun activities - oh yeah - snow too!

From decorating the school and a craft day on the 25th, the last weekend of January went by quickly. Monday was a fun sungalsses day at school and Tuesday was school spirit day. Wednesday was to be crazy socks and tie day, but the weather did not cooperate and we had a snow day. We were putting much snowed in until late in the day. The kids had a great time in the snow building a tunnel in the piles. Their disappointment of not having their spirit day wore off quickly when they got to play outside!

After a delay on Thursday, everyone wore their pajamas to school. On Friday, with another delay, activities were bustling - everyone dressed from outer space, parents had lunch with their kids and students showed off their talents in the annual school talent show. Kaylynn sang with a classmate and Garrett showed off what he has learned in 3 piano lessons playing Old MacDonald! The week ended that evening with our annual school carnival, which seemed to be a success! Thanks to Mom and Dad for helping us every year with the event and kids that evening - we would not be able to survive without them!

Kaylynn throws a "pie" at her brother!

What a trooper!

Saturday was back to basketball and Mom had it right that the games were much improved from earlier in the season. Garrett was done with basketball on Saturday and Kaylynn finished with Y-basketball tonight with a loss in the tournament. St. Paul basketball continues through the end of February. Back to focusing on judo preparing for upcoming tournaments in Kalamazoo, MI on Feb. 21st and York, PA on March 27th. Think that is it for now. Hopefully it won't be so long until the next update!
